Swim lessons

For the past few summers I had been meaning to sign our kids up for swim lessons and it just never happened. Watching all our our kids' friends advancing in their swimming skills was staring to bring out the mommy guilt, so earlier this summer I marched myself down and registered Natalie and Zander for swim lessons...just in time too cause the only classes left for the beginner level were in August. I thought this would be fine since it was an outdoor pool, the chances of cool rainy weather would be minimal. But, wouldn't you know it, this week is grey and seasonably cool. Oh well. They are both doing great. After her first lesson, Natalie said she couldn't wait to go back the next day. Both kids are both getting more comfortable with their face in the water and are responding without hesitation to the instructors.

Hayden likes playing in the kiddie pool while his brother and sister are having their lessons and I get to chat with my friends whose kids are taking lessons too.

I am glad to see the children taking swimming lessons. I started about their age and in a few years I was invited to do swimming shows at our local public pool. I went on and became a life guard and while I was in high school I use to swim for a couple miles in the ocean on a regular basis.

Growing up on the ocean did not hurt, and I realize that I had opportunities that most children never got to have.

One of our neighbors had a pool business and when I was not at the ocean I was either helping them install pools or demonstrating their pools at their showroom.

Come to think of it I had some pretty good jobs in high school.

The children probably do not even notice how cool it is outside, in fact it might make it a little easier because the temperature of the water is probably the same and just the outside temperature in cooler.

Wow swimming in the ocean! I think I can count on one hand the number of times I have swam in the ocean...I usually have to fly far away from our coast to do so. (New York, Mexico, Caribbean).

Yes, but you have to remember where I grew up!

Alyssa,
Camping was lots of fun! I love the Oregon Coast! Our campground had tons of bunny rabbits hopping around-the kids LOVED that! We had the best weather on Sat. for on the beach play and just had a wonderful time. The only issue I had was that the campground didn't have nearly enough trees, no bike trails and no campfires-Bummer! But we had fun anyhow! I don't think we will be going back to that one though. We should've went to the one we went to last time.
We went to Tillamook cheese factory too, that's always fun!!! Yummy!
Thanks for asking! Hope to see ya soon!

Yeah, your dad knew the GOOD life. Pretty amazing considering how difficult it would be for the average family to live there now. Is it any wonder that being a beach bum was his career of choice.

My swimming lessons were out in Little Spanaway Lake. I don't know if you remember it but it wasn't the nicest place. It was were your Grandpa took sail-boarding lessons.

It was clean enough but it was surrounded with Douglas fir trees and was full of things that fall from trees mixed in with the silty bottom. Think of a bunch of little kids stretched out in the water holding on to a log was laid out along the shore, and then being told to put their sweet little faces into that water that had bark and other things floating in it. Lovely.

Oddly enough, my favorite way of moving in the water was always to swim underwater. Yes, I kept my eyes open without goggles.

No natural sand exists in Washington that I can remember. It was either rocks or mud. Adding to that the temperature of the water. Spanaway was not that deep so it would warm up a bit but most of the lakes were glacier fed and deep which you can translate as COLD. The Puget Sound was something like 56 degrees. Brrrrr.

When I was in high school, we visited my dad's uncle up in the Sierras near Paradise, California. One of his neighbors took Dan and me out to a stream that flowed down the mountains and it was WARM. It had a smooth bottom and it made the perfect long water-slide. I had a very hard time believing that someone's hot-water tank wasn't involved since it was strangely, but wonderfully, very warm. That was a lot of fun.

I had to enlarge the photos to see just who was in the pool with the kids. She looks so much like their mom - even the hair-do looked familiar...

Yeah for the kids! I am glad to see they are liking there swim lessons so well. It will be so great for them to have more freedom in the pool and confidence! That instructor does look like you a little. How fun.

She doesn't look like me in real life, but I can see the similarities from the photos.

Yesterday Natalie finally put her head underwater and was so excited! After her lesson she spent quite a while in the kiddie pool "swimming" with her face in the water.
