Local Flavor: Bob's Red Mill Breakfast

Last night Dan asked me if I wanted to go out for breakfast. I thought that sounded like a nice treat, so I suggested we try Bob's Red Mill.
Many of you might recognise the Bob's Red Mill products from the grocery store. You can find them in the baking isle (also near the soup and rice), but there are much better selections at health food stores. If you want the best selection, you can go directly to Bob's Red Mill in Milwaukie where they sell everything. You can even get a price break by purchasing the items by the box (usually 3-4 bags of same product per box).
I had visited the Bob's Red Mill store once before Hayden was born and Bob himself was there checking up on operations. Back then I thought it would be fun to go back and eat at the restaurant..and three years later, we finally did.

The kids all had silver dollar pancakes and scrambled eggs, Dan ordered sunny side up eggs with hash browns and a side of fried grits and I ordered a big bowl of fruit and a blueberry date nut bran muffin. It was all so good and unlike most breakfast meals, it was made with whole grains and unprocessed, made-from-scratch food.

Here is an example of the grind stone that they use in the mill to grind the wheat into flour. Besides your typical wheat flour, you can also buy these types.

The kids enjoyed watching the water wheel in the front of the mill. Back in the day water wheels were used to turn the grind stones inside the mill. Now all of the grinding takes palce in a different building across the street, but the wheel remains as a cool reminder of days gone by.

We didn't leave empty handed. We found cinnamon rolls, blueberry date nut bran muffins, biscuits, freshly ground almond butter, potato bread mix, corn grits, buckwheat pancake mix and date nut bran muffin mix.

Let me know how the almond butter tastes. Some people have told me it's kind of bland. But with Ryan's allergy, this is what I need to buy instead of peanut butter.

Hey, that store employee looks a little like Dan!

What, no Caturday?

I have also always wanted to visit there and eat there! How fun!
I am a sucker for cinnamon rolls and those look so good!
I love Bob's 10 Grain Hot Cereal! Yum! It's got all the good stuff, soy, flax, etc!
I also like to add a little wheat germ into our cookies.

I love their muffin mixes and their soup mixes...and I like all the healthy alternatives they offer. They had a multi-grain tortilla chip with flax seeds that looked so good, but our basket was already full. They also had whole wheat cake mixes in a bunch of different flavors...so much better for you. I'll have to make a trip there more often. There is a new Bob's Red Mill baking cookbook that looked interesting and I'm sure it's full of lots of goodies.

The restaurant is yummy. I think you'll like it too. They only serve breakfast and lunch and you can download their menus off the website.

Where's the love for the pop tarts, chocolate chewy granola bars, sugary cereal, etc?
What's the bad guy's name from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang that lures the children with his sweets?

There's no love at our house for Pop Tarts. :0) Or any prefab/processed pocket meal like Uncrustables, Hot Pockets etc. Sorry those are nasty!

Is that real meat in those hot pocket thingy's? Yuck!
You know I'm a die hard chocoholic though! Had to get my two cents in!

I think it's as real as the meat in chicken McNuggets!!! It might have been meat at one time, but by the time they are done processing it, I'm not sure what to call it.

Oh and I have nothing against chocolate...it's my favorite food group!
