Making progress

This afternoon, Zander and I went to Home Depot to pick up paint. Shortly after we got home, I patched the holes and started to prime the walls. The girl at Home Depot suggested using an oil based primer because the walls had wall paper paste on them which is not easy to remove. Besides the fact that oil based paint stinks like crazy, it is also a bit messier to paint with. I have a fine mist of paint splatter all over my hands and fore arms.

After dinner Dan went to a Blazer game with our neighbor (who is the Blazer's dentist). After I read a few stories and brushed their teeth, I tucked the kids in and went back downstairs to start painting. Here is my progress for tonight. Those of you who have been into the house we had in Troutdale may recognize the paint colors and technique. I liked it so much I decided to try it again. It's hard to tell from the photo, but the top half is actually tone on tone, kind of blended together. I painted the darker of the two colors on the bottom and when all is said and done we will put the chair rail back up in the area that is white. So what do you think so far?

Rather than using an oil-based primer, I probably would have put on a coat of pigmented shellac colored the same as the top coat you were planning to use.

The shellac would have sealed the wallpaper paste and would have provided a good primer coat.

Besides, it does not cost as much!

Yea, I'm sure she was "upselling" to get me to buy the primer. It was $18. Oh well, it's done and I won't worry about it. Unfortunately, the primer doesn't just wash off in the shower, so now I look like I have white freckles all over my arms and hands.

Alyssa! It's gorgeous so far! I can't wait to actually see it in person.
BTW, I LOVE your hydreanga (sp?) arrangement on your table. Is that from your yard? I have had the worst luck keeping my bushes alive. Except for one. It was so hearty. My friend has this monster bush at her N. Ptld. home and she gave me a start or two. Well, this one did so well but it is at our old house. I wanted so badly to replant it here but, Shawn said to please, just leave it. Whatever. :-) I know I can get more from her though.

How did you know how to do that technique?

sweetktea, I think I am reading your comments the moment they are posted. I clicked refresh and there is a new post. Good to hear from you. Yes the hydrangeas are from our home in Troutdale. I think I may need to freshen it up a bit next year. There are a few hydrangea bushes here as well. Did you know if you leave the flowers on the bush until October, the blue ones turn deep purple!

Anyway, the technique I did uses a roller system called wall magic. You can get the kit at Home Depot or Lowes. It basically lets you apply two colors at the same time using a double roller that has a special pattern built onto the roller. The effect is cool and is so easy.
