In a bit of a Pickle

Peter picked a peck of pickled peppers...
Today was pickle day for the Rieker family. Everyone met at Uncle Skip and Aunt Nancy's house in Canby to make the Rieker family pickle recipe. It was a fun experience for the whole family.

Prepping for pickles. Uncle Ken and Uncle David washed and sorted all the cucumbers and dill thoroughly while Aunt Mavis cut up garlic from Ken and Helen's garden.

Using the Rieker family recipe as a guide, Aunt Nancy and Aunt Helen carefully add just the right amount of spices to the canning jars. Everyone took turns packing the pickling cucumbers in. The kids enjoyed helping Grandma "flutter." After the cucumers were packed in tight, water is added, along with a grape leaf to ensure the brine covers the cucumbers turning them into pickles. We still have to agitate the jars for 3 days and let them sit for a month, but in the end we will have 15 jars of pickles! Sandwich anyone?

I have never done pickles in a kiddy swimming pool. Ken looks like he is having a good time. What is he doing now?

Well, I need to get Mom ready for Church and breakfast.

Love,

Dad

Yeah, we had fun making pickles. I'm not sure what Ken is up to exactly. I feel bad that I didn't even ask him, but we were so busy chatting away about other things, I guess I just forgot. He asked how you were doing and I told him you were getting better all the time.

Love,

Alyssa
